Look around the house for clear plastics such as from old packaging or binder covers.  At a last resort, you can buy clear vinyl from large fabric stores, but it's probably cheaper to cut up a plastic folder from a stationery store instead.

Test plastic by sewing through it with a couple of layers of fabric to make sure your machine can handle the thickness!
